I am a 50 year old disabled woman artist who FINALLY started receiving SSDI benefits 3 years after suffering a debilitating accident at my not-up-to-code slumlord-grade studio. (Broken right hip, both bones right leg, shattered right foot, broken ribs. Perhaps the worst was damage to the vertebrae in my neck which puts pressure on my spinal cord, causing severe pain/numbness in neck, hands, arms. Still Recovering from recent neurosurgery. (Yup, an artist who experiences pain/ problems drawing/writing...Not good.)

Just when I thought I could see a light at the end of the tunnel and wouldn't end up homeless, I got in the first car accident I have ever been in my life. Luckily, I'm okay, but my otherwise trusty used automobile (Honda Accord Wagon) needs repairs that I can't afford.

Now, I'll tell you, it's much easier to live without a car when you're in good physical shape- disabled people need a car more than ever! I live in a bad neighborhood and can't just walk to the wildly overpriced convenience store without fear of being mugged/shot. I can't take the bus with all my groceries. I am missing doctors and physcial therapy appointments because I can't get there.

I try to pay people to take me to necessary appointments and to get groceries, but that is getting ridiculously expensive. Being house-bound has made me very depressed. Please, please help me fix my otherwise well-maintained and reliable used automobile so I can maintain a somewhat independent life, and take myself to medical appointments and the grocery store. I'm a survivor, and have been righting for so long, I'm exhausted. Please! Thanks so much...

Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

It's difficult for me to know where to begin when articulating my deep appreciation for the donors to Modest Needs who have made it possible for me to get my car fixed and drive again. This program is amazing- it's such an empowering, good idea that 'regular' people are involved in helping other 'regular' people. Many of my friends have observed that people who have been through some hard times themselves are often more likely to help others than those who have had a pretty easy ride. I can only speculate that the generosity of many of the good people of Modest Needs comes from a place of familiarity with hardship, and appreciation for someone who helped them. Of course, I don't know this for sure, but I like the idea and the energy of this whole pay-it-forward momentum. So thanks again from the bottom of my heart. You can be sure that as soon as I am able, I will do my best to particpate in this valuable program as a donor.
