I am a divorced single father whose daughter lives with me part-time. I am a full-time student at a local college. I also work part-time as a school bus driver. I stay current in my child support payments and mortgage. When the furnace went out, I only anticipated a bill of $200 or so. It has mushroomed into a bill of over $1000, and it still isn't finished. As I am in school full-time, that limits the amount of time available for employment. There are fewer and fewer full-time jobs left here anyway. Education was the only sensible way out of the rut after I was laid off.

I can keep up with my usual budget, but none of my usual bills come anywhere close to the unanticipated bill for the furnace repair. Since I have to charge more of this type of expense, like for my car, I am trying to keep my head above water so I may finish school. I do not want to get behind on the mortgage or the child support. Since this bill is also from the company that I buy fuel from, it becomes doubly important for me to stay in good credit standing with them, lest they drop me as a customer. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated, given that it is the middle of the wintertime.

Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

This is a letter I didn't know if I'd ever get to write. My application came down to the last few days before expiration, so while I knew it was close, it would only be by the grace of Heaven that the donors would consider my application out of the many that Modest Needs receives. I'm in a state of amazement as I write this, since I also did my taxes yesterday, and the refund won't amount to even less than half of the amount I need for the total furnace bill. The miserable tax refund situation makes your donations that much more of a blessing. I don't need to mention how rough this winter has been, since the whole country knows that. Your donations are a true blessing to honest, hard-working people determined to make it out of a rut. I especially want all of you to know that your kindness won't be forgotten. Where I won't ever know who any of you are, I do want you to realize I aspire to be one of you someday. The employment picture around the Midwest is pretty bleak, and I know the manufacturing environment that my longtime job was in is gone forever. My only hope is make the best of what I can with the education I'm striving so hard for now. While a great paycheck in the future is only pure speculation now, I want you to know I will do what I can to someday be able to help bring positive change to a person's life, just as you did for me. Thank you donors, and Thank You, Modest Needs.
