My wife has MS for 30 years, diabetes for 16 years. I caught MRSA 2 years ago, which nearly killed me, and did damage to my heart requiring open-heart surgery and a pacemaker, along with damage to my liver, kidneys, lungs, and bone marrow. During my 17-week hospitalization, we exhausted our life savings paying for an attendant for my wife who was wheelchair bound during that time. We have many unpaid doctor bills.

We have applied for mortgage payment reduction (the government's HAMP program) through our lender and received temporary approval. We make our third reduced payment on Aug 2 and hopefully they will approve us for permanent modification shortly thereafter. Our expenses (reduced mortgage, utilities, food, and sundry items) just about equal our income, but there aren't much left over for any extras, such as clothing, haircuts, hypoallergenic products (my wife and I both have very sensitive skin. She always has, and I have since the MRSA.), extra and unplanned bills (this is our third plumber service this year) which have to be paid immediately cause everything else to be shifted around and paid late.

I am seriously behind on my water & power bill due to these other bills, but they are helpful and are working with me so I can catch up. If I could get out from under one relatively small bill, it would help me a lot to catch up elsewhere. They want $100 per month. I give them $50, and they threaten me with a lien against my house. Under California law, as I understand it, they could try and force a foreclosure, but as the house is 'underwater' I suspect the lender would have something to say about this. But the threats cause stress for both my wife, and me, and stress is seriously adverse to both MS and a permanently damaged heart.

Thank you for your consideration.

Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

I are extremely grateful for the assistance provided by Modest Need's donors. This was a small bill that we were paying to a company that didn't treat us very well. At the rate we could pay it would have taken more than eight months when you add in interest, which they do. I have other past due bills, and what you have done will make it easier to catch up on them. You have made both my life and my wife's so much easier. We both suffer from chronic health conditions which stress adversely affects. Your donors have lifted a considerable source of stress, and for this we say thank you. I am amazed and overjoyed to see that there are still so many kind, caring, decent, and giving people left in this world where so many are none of these things. I read through some of your pending applications and was surprised at how many of the same situations I saw which were the same as some I have had to deal with personally over the past few years. People may be different, but the same life problems strike many of us. I plan to become a donor to modest needs when my own financial situation equalizes out a bit more, a few months maybe, but this will happen. It is well worth doing. I an extremely grateful to the donors (I don't even know how many) who read my situation and were moved by it to help me. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart, as does my wife and may God Bless You and Hold You In The Light.
